We would like to introduce you to our rescued German Shepard Dog and her puppies. Grets, as we now call her came into our lives about 7 weeks ago. I was outside with the dogs and saw her in the yard a few houses a way. I approached her and called to her but she was frightened and ran from me. When she ran, I saw she was bone thin. I could literally count every rib and see every vertebrae. Through that first encounter, I learned that our neighbor had brought her home about a week prior. He said she had been hanging around where they were working(he is a painter) and he lured her with some potato salad and brought her home. He then said, she broke out the back screen and so he figured she went to live on a farm somewhere. Anyway, I took a bowl of food out to the woods where I had seen her leave and go into. We then started putting food out for her every night. For quite some time, she came like clock work every night and you could set a watch by when she would come-12:45 am. Then about a month ago, she came around 9 pm and Matt, my son, said she looked like she was getting fat. I went to sneak a peak and saw that she looked pregnant to me. Of course, we didn't know how far along she was so we just continued to feed her and try to coax her to us. Then for 3 days she didn't come at all. I was concerned that something had happened to her and so we walked the streets and the paths that I knew she would take until it was dark and we couldn't see in the woods anymore. I had still been putting food out for her.
Sunday night, her food bowl had been moved because we had mowed the lawn. The food was eaten that night, but not in her usual fashion. The next day, a neighbor said she had found a different stray, so I thought that possibly that dog had eaten what we had left and so I didn't put food out on Monday. Tuesday, I put food out and it was eaten but I didn't see her that night. Wed, same thing but this time we saw her. I saw the all too familiar sway under her belly that told me she was now nursing pups and presumed she had given birth to her pups. On a Friday afternoon after all the rain from Katrina had stopped, we went looking for her pups and found them in the woods not too far from our house. She came out of her little den she had made and barked at us, but she did allow me to check her puppies over. We had gotten about 2.5 inches of rain Thursday night and Friday and the pups were pretty dry but a tad on the chilled side. We went back later that evening with more food for her and an igloo dog house and bedding for it. She kept them in the igloo and the pups continued to grow and thrive. She was doing a great job as a mama. She would come out in the field from the woods near where she has the pups when I call her and come within about 10-15 ft of me- she still didn't trust me enough.
To make a very long story shorter, we finally have Grets here with us now. She is safe and her 6 puppies (1 female and 5 males) are also safe and doing well. We have got mom and the babies up to date on all their vet care and everyone is very healthy. Grets was in what a lot of people call survival mode. Quite simply, she was just trying to meet basic needs of food and shelter to try to stay alive. Dogs like that lose their trust in humans for that time, but all they need is to be shown again that humans can indeed show them caring and compassion and they will usually revert back to being a "pet animal" again pretty simply and happily. Grets is very much back to being our pet and loving every minute of it.
I believe that Grets was very happy to be rescued and has just been a gem since she came in to our home. At first, she was kind of timid around people she did not know. She would always want to go see them but would belly crawl the last few steps to them. Now, she is doing great and has become a "real dog". She wags her tail when she sees us all (my family) and now greets strangers on all 4 feet instead of crouching. She is with us often when she is willing to leave her babies and has met our dogs. She is great with them. She is also good with our 2 cats. She continues to be a great mom and is totally non-food protective (which I had almost expected with her being out on her own) She will let me pet her while eating cookies and her food and has even discovered that dog beds are a great place to rest. She walks well on a lead and has learned some very basic commands as well as her name. She is even housetrained! She is great about grooming and has no problems having her nails done and loves to be brushed. I think her favorite thing is belly rubs!! I am just amazed how quickly all has come around for her.
*Update: November 7, 2005* All puppies have been placed and Grets will be placed in her forever home after she's spayed.
